Borax is in so many things you already use. It’s in laundry detergent, cleaning supplies and even in some makeup. It’s been around a very, very long time – all the way back to the 8th century AD!
20 Mule Team Borax was first sold for use in the home all the way back in the 1890s. People have been using it around the house ever since!
Borax does so many things that I think it should always be a go-to, inexpensive staple in everyone’s house. It’s the best.
The Best Ways to Use Borax
1. Borax will get rid of the awful smell in your garbage disposal. Sprinkle 3 TBSP in and let sit for 30 minutes. Let the water run, turn on the disposal, and the smell will be gone.
2. Always make sure you have several tablespoons under the bag in your trash can. It helps so much with odors!
3. Freshen your carpets with a mix of one cup Borax and one cup baking soda. Add in about 20 drops of your favorite essential oils if you like, although it’s not necessary.
Store it in a shaker bottle (an old Parmesan bottle, for instance). Sprinkle it on carpets, let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes and vacuum.
4. Preserve fresh flowers perfectly. Mix 1 part Borax to 2 parts cornmeal into an airtight container. Carefully place your fresh flowers in the mix and sprinkle more mix on top. Close the container and let it sit for 2 weeks.
5. Rid your stuff of rust. Make a paste of 1 cup Borax, 2 cups warm water, and a little lemon juice. Put it on something that’s rusted and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes. You should be able to wash the rust away.
6. Fixed a clogged drain using 1/2 cup and boiling water. Pour into the drain and don’t run any more water down it for at least 20 minutes or so.
7. Get grime and dirt out of a mattress. Use a wet cloth and scrub some of the powder into the mattress. Let it dry completely and then vacuum.
8. Remove sticker residue using 2 parts Borax to 1 part water. It’ll wipe right off.
9. You can make ant bait with 1/2 cup of sugar, 3 TBSP Borax and one cup of warm water. Stir it up well and drop cotton balls in to soak it all up.
Put the cotton balls wherever you see ants coming in. (Careful not to put them where animals can eat them.)
Don’t kill the ants! They need to track it all back to their colony.

10. Borax does a great job of cleaning up outdoor furniture. Put 1 tsp of Dawn dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle along with 1 tsp Borax and 1 quart of warm water. Shake it up until it’s mixed well and spray on furniture.
